Breast Lift in Southern California

A breast lift, or mastopexy, restores a higher, firmer breast shape by removing stretched skin and reshaping your own tissue, no implants required. Tim Sayed MD, a double board-certified plastic surgeon serving Southern California, performs breast lifts for patients across the region, many of whom want a natural result after pregnancy, weight change, or implant removal.

At a glance

Breast lift at a glance

What it is

A surgical lift that raises and reshapes sagging breasts using your own tissue, repositioning the nipple higher without adding volume from implants.

Who it suits

Women bothered by drooping, deflated, or downward-pointing breasts after pregnancy, weight loss, aging, or implant removal, who are at a stable weight and in good health.

Southern California cost

Typically about $10,000 to $16,000 in total across Southern California, covering the surgeon's fee, anesthesia, and accredited facility fees. Financing is available, and your exact price comes from a written quote.

Procedure time

About 2 to 3 hours as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia, so you recover at home the same day.

Recovery

Desk work in about 1 to 2 weeks, full exercise around 4 to 6 weeks, and the final shape settling over 3 to 6 months.

Provider

Tim Sayed MD, MBA, FACS, a double board-certified plastic surgeon serving Southern California for more than 20 years.

A breast lift changes breast position and shape, not size. If you want to stay about the same cup size with breasts that sit higher and look firmer, a lift alone is usually the right operation; if you also want more upper-pole fullness, a lift with implants is the combined option.

The procedure

What is a breast lift?

A breast lift, medically called a mastopexy, is surgery that raises and reshapes breasts that have begun to sag, a condition surgeons call ptosis. Dr. Sayed removes excess, stretched skin, tightens the remaining breast tissue into a firmer mound, and moves the nipple and areola up to a natural, forward-facing position. It is performed under general anesthesia as a same-day outpatient procedure and usually takes about 2 to 3 hours.

Most patients choose a lift for one of three reasons: breasts that dropped after pregnancy and breastfeeding, sagging that followed significant weight loss, or deflation and extra skin left behind after breast implant removal. In each case the goal is the same: a breast that sits higher on the chest and looks proportional to the rest of your figure.

A lift does not add volume or increase cup size on its own. If your main concern is lost fullness in the upper breast, you may be a better fit for a breast lift with implants, which combines the lift with an implant to restore size and position in one procedure.

Candidacy

Am I a good candidate, and who is not?

You are likely a good candidate for a breast lift if your breasts sag, point downward, or have lost shape, and you are at a stable weight and in good general health. The procedure suits women after pregnancy, weight loss, or implant removal who want a natural, lifted shape rather than a larger size. At your consultation, Dr. Sayed examines your skin quality, nipple position, and breast tissue to confirm whether a lift alone, or a lift combined with another procedure, best meets your goals.

You may be a strong candidate if you

have breasts that sag, droop, or have lost firmness and shape

have nipples or areolae that point downward or sit below the breast crease

are at a stable weight and in good general health

are a nonsmoker or are willing to stop all nicotine for several weeks before and after surgery

have realistic goals and are able to set aside time for recovery

It may not be the right time if you

are planning a future pregnancy, which can stretch the breasts and change your result

are still breastfeeding or stopped less than 6 months ago

are actively losing a large amount of weight, in which case it is better to reach a stable weight first

mainly want more size or upper fullness, which calls for implants or a lift with implants rather than a lift alone

expect a lift to erase every sign of aging permanently, which no surgery can promise

The most common misunderstanding is expecting a lift to make you bigger. A lift raises and firms what you have; a larger cup size requires implants or fat grafting added during or after the lift.

Your options

Your breast lift options: the donut, lollipop, and anchor lift

There is no single best breast lift. The right pattern depends on how much your breasts sag and how much extra skin needs to come out, and Dr. Sayed recommends the pattern with the least scarring that will still hold the result.

Benelli (donut) lift

A circular incision around the edge of the areola removes a modest amount of skin for a subtle lift. It suits mild sagging and leaves the least visible scar, but it cannot correct significant droop on its own.

Lollipop (vertical) lift

This pattern adds a vertical incision from the areola down to the breast crease, which lets Dr. Sayed reshape the tissue for moderate sagging and post-pregnancy change. It is the most commonly used pattern and balances correction against scarring.

Anchor (inverted-T) lift

This pattern combines the areolar and vertical incisions with one along the breast crease, giving the most control for significant droop or the loose skin left after major weight loss or implant removal. It leaves more scar in exchange for the strongest reshaping.

Beyond the incision pattern, Dr. Sayed also recommends how much to reduce an enlarged areola, whether to add fat grafting for upper-pole shape, and whether to pair the lift with implant removal or a small implant. He previews these choices with you using your own measurements at the consultation.

The guiding rule is that the amount of sagging determines the scar, not the other way around. Dr. Sayed uses the smallest incision that is likely to hold your result, rather than promising a scar pattern that cannot achieve the correction.

How it works

How a breast lift is done

A breast lift is performed under general anesthesia at an accredited surgery center and usually takes about 2 to 3 hours. After marking the skin while you are upright, Dr. Sayed removes the stretched excess skin, reshapes the breast tissue into a firmer, higher mound, repositions the nipple and areola, and closes in layers so the deeper tissue, not the skin, carries the tension. Three decisions shape your result: the incision pattern, how the nipple's blood supply is preserved and the nipple repositioned, and whether anything is added for volume.

Incision pattern

Donut. The least scar, for mild sagging only.

Lollipop. A vertical scar for moderate sagging, the most common choice.

Anchor. The most reshaping, for significant droop or loose skin after implant removal.

Nipple and areola

Pedicle. The nipple stays attached to its own blood supply and nerves as it is lifted, which helps preserve sensation and, in most cases, the ability to breastfeed.

Areola size. A stretched areola can be reduced to match the new, higher breast shape.

Symmetry. Each side is planned to its own measurements, since few breasts start out matched.

Techniques that matter

Auto-augmentation. Your own lower breast tissue can be rotated upward to add natural upper-pole fullness without an implant, which is useful after implant removal.

Fat grafting. A small amount of your own fat can be added for subtle fullness in the same procedure.

Tension on tissue, not skin. Closing the deep layer under tension helps the result last and helps keep scars fine.

Many patients combine a lift with another procedure. If you also want more size, see breast lift with implants; if you are removing implants first, Dr. Sayed often performs the lift during breast implant removal. Explore the full range of breast surgery at Tim Sayed MD.

Cost

How much does a breast lift cost in Southern California?

A breast lift in Southern California typically costs about $10,000 to $16,000 in total, covering the surgeon's fee, general anesthesia, and accredited facility fees. Adding implants or combining the lift with another procedure raises the total, while the exact figure depends on the incision pattern and the complexity of your case. Because every plan is different, the only accurate number is the written quote you receive after your consultation.

Expect roughly $10,000 to $16,000 for a breast lift across Southern California, more if implants or a second procedure are added. The written quote from your consultation is the only exact figure, since price follows the technique your anatomy actually needs.

What moves the price

Incision pattern and complexity. A full anchor lift involves more surgery and operating time than a modest donut lift, which affects the fee.

Combined procedures. Pairing the lift with implants, implant removal, or a tummy tuck raises the total, though combining can cost less than separate surgeries.

Anesthesia and facility. Surgery is performed with board-certified anesthesia care at an accredited surgical facility, and both are included in your quoted price.

Surgeon experience. The fee reflects the experience of a double board-certified plastic surgeon with more than 20 years in practice, and experience can help make results more predictable.

A breast lift is an elective cosmetic procedure, so it is not usually covered by insurance. Financing options let you spread the cost over monthly payments, and you can review typical plastic surgery pricing before your visit.

Recovery

Recovery, step by step

Most patients return to desk work in about 1 to 2 weeks, resume light activity soon after, and are cleared for full exercise around 4 to 6 weeks. Swelling settles over the following weeks and the final breast shape appears over about 3 to 6 months. Dr. Sayed sends you home with a written recovery plan and sees you through each stage of healing.

Day of surgery

You go home the same day in a supportive surgical bra, with mild to moderate soreness managed by medication.

First week

Rest with limited arm motion; most soreness and bruising peak and then begin to ease.

Weeks 2 to 4

Return to desk work and light daily activity, and switch to the bras Dr. Sayed recommends.

Weeks 4 to 6

Gradually resume full exercise and heavier lifting as cleared at your follow-up.

3 to 6 months

Swelling largely resolves, scars begin to fade, and your final lifted shape settles in.

Common recovery questions

Sleeping. Sleep on your back, slightly elevated, for the first few weeks to protect the healing breasts.

Driving. Resume driving once you are off prescription pain medication and can move comfortably, usually within about a week.

Exercise. Walking is encouraged early; chest and upper-body workouts wait until you are cleared around 4 to 6 weeks.

Scars. Incision lines look pink and firm at first, then soften and fade over 6 months to 2 years; Dr. Sayed guides scar care throughout.

Breastfeeding. Because the nipple stays attached to its tissue, many patients can still breastfeed, though it cannot be guaranteed for anyone.

The surgeon

Breast lift with Tim Sayed MD

A breast lift depends on judgment as much as technique, because the surgeon must choose the pattern that holds the result with the least scar, and Tim Sayed MD brings both. He is double board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, trained at UCSF, Harvard, and Massachusetts General Hospital, and has practiced for more than 20 years. The same surgeon who plans your lift performs it and follows you through recovery.

Dr. Sayed is known nationally for breast implant removal and breast implant illness care, so he regularly reshapes breasts that have been stretched by implants, which is demanding lift work. That experience informs how he handles tissue and places incisions on every lift. We invite you to review his credentials and results before you decide.

Southern California's beaches and active lifestyle, from La Jolla Cove and the Orange County coast to year-round yoga, Pilates, and gym routines, are part of daily life for many patients. Because a breast lift is about shape and position rather than size, it tends to sit naturally under swimwear and athletic wear once you heal. The coastal sun can darken fresh scars, so Dr. Sayed has every patient keep incisions protected and out of direct UV for the first several months, which is manageable here with good sunscreen and coverage.

Questions

Breast lift FAQs

How much does a breast lift cost in Southern California?

A breast lift in Southern California typically costs about $10,000 to $16,000 in total, covering the surgeon, general anesthesia, and accredited facility fees. It is an elective cosmetic procedure that insurance does not usually cover, though financing is available. Your exact price comes from a written quote after your consultation.

Will a breast lift make my breasts bigger or smaller?

A breast lift mainly changes position and shape, not size, so your cup size usually stays close to where it started. Removing stretched skin can make breasts feel slightly smaller and firmer, while reshaping tissue higher on the chest can make them look fuller. If you want a larger size, implants or fat grafting can be added during the lift.

Where are breast lift scars, and do they fade?

Breast lift scars sit around the areola and, depending on the pattern, run vertically down to the breast crease and sometimes along the crease itself. They look pink and raised at first, then typically soften and fade over 6 months to 2 years. Dr. Sayed places incisions where bras and swimwear can often conceal them and guides scar care throughout healing, though scars never disappear completely.

How long does breast lift recovery take?

Most patients return to desk work in about 1 to 2 weeks and are cleared for full exercise around 4 to 6 weeks. Swelling eases over the following weeks and the final shape settles over 3 to 6 months. You go home the same day and receive a written recovery plan.

Can I breastfeed after a breast lift?

Many patients can still breastfeed after a breast lift because the nipple is kept attached to its underlying tissue, ducts, and blood supply. That said, no breast surgery can guarantee breastfeeding, and sensation or milk supply can change. If future breastfeeding matters to you, tell Dr. Sayed so he can plan accordingly.

How long does a breast lift last?

Breast lift results are long-lasting but not permanent, and many patients keep a higher, firmer shape for years, especially with a stable weight and good support. Aging, gravity, pregnancy, and weight change continue over time, so some settling is normal, but the breasts generally stay well above where they started.

Do I need implants with my breast lift?

You only need implants if you want more size or upper-pole fullness than your own tissue provides. A lift alone raises and firms the breasts you have, while adding an implant restores volume at the same time. Many patients after pregnancy or implant removal are happy with a lift alone, and Dr. Sayed will advise you on which approach fits your goals. See breast lift with implants for the combined option.

Can I have a breast lift after implant removal?

Yes. A breast lift is one of the most common procedures after implant removal, and Dr. Sayed often performs both in the same operation. Once the implants are out, the remaining skin and tissue are reshaped and lifted, sometimes using your own tissue for upper fullness, to restore a natural, proportional shape. Dr. Sayed is known nationally for breast implant removal and BII care.

Will a breast lift affect nipple sensation?

Most patients keep normal nipple sensation after a breast lift because the nipple is moved while still attached to its nerves and blood supply. A temporary change in sensation during healing is common, and a small, lasting change is possible, as with any breast surgery. Choosing an experienced, board-certified surgeon can help lower that risk.

Is a breast lift painful?

Most patients describe tightness and soreness rather than sharp pain in the first several days, managed with the medication Dr. Sayed prescribes. Discomfort eases quickly over the first week, and many patients are off prescription pain medicine within a few days. You go home the same day in a supportive surgical bra.

How do I choose a breast lift surgeon in Southern California?

Choose a surgeon who is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, performs breast lifts regularly, and can show you before and after photos of their own patients. Ask who performs the surgery and who follows your recovery. Tim Sayed MD is double board-certified, has practiced for more than 20 years, and personally sees each patient from consultation through healing.

When I discovered the breast implant illness group and associated website so many of my mysterious symptoms/illnesses seemed to make sense. I also discovered (not having been told by my previous surgeons) that implants are not lifetime devices and need to be replaced every 10 -15 years. I decided that I did not want to keep going under anesthesia every 10 years or so and if removing them could add quality to my life (I'm only 46) having them removed was worth it. Finding a surgeon that had the experience, confidence and care needed for my situation was not easy. Dr. Sayed was the fourth surgeon I met with in the San Diego area and the only one who met all of my needs. He and his staff are kind, caring and skilled.
